It’s worth saying upfront: I’m not even sure this particular bottling is still in production. Sourced from Cascade Hollow (of George Dickel fame), this bottle of Heaven’s Door Straight Bourbon was gifted to me a few years ago, back when it served as the entry-level expression in the brand’s lineup. Since then, Heaven’s Door has reworked its core range with a new naming structure—though the liquid itself likely hasn’t changed all that much.

In the years since, the brand has gained serious momentum. With a new facility, an expanded portfolio, and a steady stream of high-priced limited releases, Heaven’s Door has clearly found an audience. But the real question is whether this original offering lives up to the weight of its name—or if it’s simply another celebrity vanity project. Let’s dive in and find out.

Nose: Classic caramel, vanilla and toffee with warm baking spices and a splash of well-worn leather and apple cobbler. It plays the hits.  

Palate: Orange peel, vanilla, confectioners’ sugar, and a touch of minerality. Gentle and soft mouthfeel that sticks quickly to the back of the tongue.  

Finish: Medium length with lemon, stale cinnamon, and clove.  

Score: 84

Would I buy again? While this older expression of Heaven’s Door Straight Bourbon has a perfectly easy sipping, classic bourbon profile, there isn’t enough here to go out looking for another bottle. At almost $50, there are better options available that push into more interesting flavor territories. I wouldn’t hate to have this poured for me at an event or in a cocktail, but for the home bar, I’d rather choose an age stated product coming out of George Dickel’s own lineup.
