Shelf Review

Designed to give you all the quick hit information you need when you’re standing in front of your local liquor store’s whisky shelf.

The house of Suntory is known for making some of the best Japanese whisky in the world. With their entry-level Toki bottling, they say they’ve made the perfect whisky for a Japanese Highball (a drink that consists of tonic water, whisky, and lemon). But is it also a great way to get into sipping Japanese whisky? Let’s find out.

 Color: Straw

Nose: Floral, grassy, and herbal hits your nose first. Then Vanilla sweetness balanced with a dash of chili powder. Luscious honey emerges as it opens up in the glass. Earthy undertones or tree bark and leather are lurking in the background.

Palate: Soft, light, and incredibly refreshing as it hits the tongue. This whisky dances across the palate, with notes of toasted marshmallow and honey. Sweeter on the palate than the nose. More vanilla notes – candy corn comes to mind -  that are balanced with grassy, floral notes on the mid-palate. A quick flash of smoke provides late intrigue and depth. The 43% ABV helps with the overall mouthfeel and keeps it from sliding too far into its own simplicity. Overall a light and elegant whisky that is easy to sip without being overly complex.

Finish: Short and sweet with more vanilla, honey, and chili spice rounding out the sip.

Score: 84

Would I buy again?

Not an incredibly complex whisky, Toki is a great set it and forget it sipper. It makes no bold statements but does feature some of the hallmarks of great Japanese blending. It’s a decent entry into Japanese whisky and could be the perfect summer afternoon whisky. And after making my last pour into a Highball, I think I may agree with Suntory – this is a phenomenal cocktail whisky!
