Balblair 2005 (First Release) Shelf Review
Shelf Review
Designed to give you all the quick hit information you need when you’re standing in front of your local liquor store’s whisky shelf.
Let’s cut to the chase: Balblair isn’t a distillery that most American drinkers are seeking out. Located in the Highlands, it remains an enigma for most – going through periods of mothballing, to periods of “vintage releases” to today’s more traditional lineup. But even after establishing a core range of 12, 15, 18, and 21 year expressions, its distribution (at least near me) seems somewhat limited. And with its entry level age stated 12 year commanding an almost $70 MSRP, it was a distillery that I wasn’t willing to take a risk on. But when K&L began offerings a long-discontinued vintage release for more than 50% off, I couldn’t resist.
Enter Balblair vintage 2005 – a whisky distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2015. Featuring a 46% ABV and an original MSRP of $79.99, it feels like a lot to spend for a ten year old product that is most likely aged exclusively in ex-bourbon casks. But at $30, it felt like a risk worth taking. So, let’s dive in and see if it’s worth the plunge!
Age: 10 Years Old (Distilled 2005 and bottled 2005)
ABV: 46%
Cask: Ex-bourbon barrels (Not stated but evidence suggest)
MSRP: $79.99
Distillery Name: Balblair
Review Date: 11/25/24
Nose: Delicious vanilla cream, gardenia, honeysuckle, orange slices, and lemon. Fresh, classic with a strong malty spirit backbone.
Palate: Juicy fruit, honey, warm bread, white chocolate shavings, light caramel, with a slight minerality. Mouthfeel is fantastic with good weight on it. Refreshingly easy to drink.
Finish: Slightly nutty coffee cake and saltwater taffy. Medium length with an easy, cleaning character that reminds me of champagne.
