Benromach 2007 Cask Strength Batch 1 Review
Shelf Review
Designed to give you all the quick hit information you need when you’re standing in front of your local liquor store’s whisky shelf.
Before I found this bottle on sale at K&L earlier this year, I had never tried anything from Benromach. Their traditional bottle design always left a bit to be desired for me and I normally found myself passing over them for a Glendronach 12 or a more classic Speysider. But after stopping to take a look at the specs on this bottle, I couldn’t resist picking it up. Distilled in 2007 and bottled way back in 2018, this cask strength Benromach boasts no chill filtration and completely natural color. Clocking in at 58.2% ABV, this whiskey won’t be for the faint of heart.

Nose: Sweet peat, soft ash, a sugared smoke meat - almost like the maple glaze on Thanksgiving turkey, but instead used on bacon. Lemongrass and toasted bark mingles with the smell of a freshly put out campfire.
Palate: Surprisingly less peat on the palate than the nose. Instead, there is a funky malt note wrapped up in a hint of Traeger smoke. Sweeter than I expected, but similar to licking old leather (but in a good way!) The mouthfeel is excellent. Full bodied and toasty, the heat is well contained – even at 58%. This is lip-smacking good – with less peat than I initially expected.
Finish: Long, warming finish with notes of honey, bitter tobacco, and slightly briny peat (almost like soggy burned log). There’s heat here, but never feels spicy.
