Many would immediately see this on a shelf think that this Game of Thrones release by Diageo is just a bunch of brand association marketing. And at its MSRP of around $150, I would absolutely agree. But if you didn’t hear, Game of Thrones ended over a year and half ago now, leaving many fans out there with a bitter taste in their mouth and leaving many of these whiskies languishing on local shelves…. So if you see this on sale, should you grab it?

Nose: Big, meaty, nutty sherry flavors. There is an undercurrent of smoke, but the rich sweetness from the sherry dominates the nose. Faint iodine and salinity are present as well.

Palate: Rich, big flavors here. Loads of nutty umami mixed with raisin sweetness. There is a hint of vanilla and toffee likely owned to its finishing in ex-bourbon barrels. This is big and bold with a great mouthfeel that coats the mouth. Dried fruits appear. The sweetness is balanced with the faint minerality like drinking in a salty sea breeze. The proof is perfect here, giving good weight to the mouthfeel without a full-on assault on the tastebuds.

Finish: Long finish with a gradual descent from the big flavors of the palate. Lingering sherry sweetness that you can chew on for a long time between sips.

Score: 92

Would I buy? I wouldn’t be a buyer at $150, but recently I picked this bottle up for less than $60 and at that price, this is a serious winner. A great bottle with a great palate and long finish.
