Speyburn 10 Year Shelf Review
Shelf Review
Designed to give you all the quick hit information you need when you’re standing in front of your local liquor store’s whisky shelf.
Speyburn isn’t the first name that comes to mind when it comes to Speyside Scotch. But with a 10 year age statement, coming in at 43% ABV, and readily available for around $25, it’s hard to argue against the specs on their entry level offering. But even at this low of a price, is it worth exploring outside the Speyside big hitters like Glenlivet and Glenfiddich? Let’s dive into this 50ML sample and find out.
Age: 10 Years
ABV: 43%
Cask: Ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask
MSRP: $25
Distillery Name: Speyburn
Review Date: 10/25/23
Nose: Fresh honeysuckle, vanilla cream, singed heather, toasted coconut, lemon zest, with a dollop of malt and a hint of rose wine.
Palate: Lively little guy. Burst of orange, tart fruit, hint of peat, and waves of that vanilla cream and fresh cut flowers. It’s spikey at times and a bit unruly for only 43%. And while it’s overall demeanor is soft and gentle the burst of orange on the front is unexpected and keeps you on your toes. But it settles down quickly. Mouthfeel is fine, but nothing to write home about.
Finish: Short finish. Drying spice with a light nutmeg and barrel char character. More lemon zest and a big malty note on the finish. A touch of bitterness that grows the more you drink – but isn’t enough to dissuade you from the next sip.
