Opinion Through the Bottle: When I opened this bottle, I thought - while interesting - it lacked some of the depth of other Irish whiskies in this price range. And this isn’t a cheap whisky - with prices ranging from $40-50 in my area. It felt too simple for that price. While a good and serviceable whiskey, I didn’t immediately fall in love. After opening, I actually let it sit for about 4 months completely untouched.

But once I picked it back up, the oxidation seemed to have brought more depth and complexity that was missing from my initial pours. The flavors opened up to more floral, fruity notes with more peaches and cream, more tropical fruit like pineapple and citrus. The nose also opened up nicely, allowing for of the malt character to shine. The thing that didn’t change however, was my feeling on the ABV. 40% is still too low for such a light bodied whiskey which ultimately leaves the whiskey feeling a bit watery and disjointed. Even the standard Redbreast 12 offering provides a more full-bodied experience at $40 than Writers’ Tears. By the time I was finishing this bottle, it had blossomed into a lovely easy drinking Irish whiskey that doesn’t ask too much of you, but provides a sweet, malty, alternative to many of the big brands out there.

Score: 88

Will I restock this? I don’t think I would pick this over Green Spot or a standard Redbreast 12; but I would be happy to enjoy a pour of it.
