Nelson Brothers Rye Review

In-Depth Review

Nelson’s Green Brier is a distillery undergoing massive changes. Started in 2009 and rooted in their long family tradition of distilling in the area, brothers Andy and Charlie Nelson have given birth to one of the most exciting new distilleries to come out of Tennessee in decades. Recently, their facility located in Nashville has undergone a massive expansion and overhaul, adding a new restaurant, bar, and expanded gift shop. And while their site does a much better job delving into the origins of the brand than I ever could (check it out here), I’d say that they also have one of the best tours I’ve been on in recent years.

In addition to the numerous special editions they offer, the Nelson Brothers brand and Green Brier Distillery currently sell a core range of Tennessee whiskey, bourbons, and for the first time in their history – a core rye whiskey. Today, we will be diving into this new straight rye expression – a non-age stated bottle that comes in at 92.5 proof and is distilled in Kentucky (not TN). It’s important to note that this is not the absolutely incredible 15 year old rye whiskey that I tried last time at the distillery (that bottle retails for $299 and remains a distillery exclusive) but instead comes in around the $40 mark and should have widespread distribution. So let’s dive in and see if this new release deserves a place on your shelf!

Nose: The nose begins with sweet honeysuckle, fresh cut flowers, and lemon Pledge. There’s a flash of orange peel that quickly fades into an interesting note of Serrano peppers. The ethanol is restrained and doesn’t jump out of the glass – leaving a pleasant and well-rounded nose. But even at 92 proof, sometimes it can feel like you’re hunting for the nose.

Palate: The palate starts with a grassy mint note before rolling gently into white pepper and chili oil. It’s well-balanced with some mixed baking spices and a touch of sandalwood. The mouthfeel is solid, with a medium body that coats the mouth better than I expected for the proof.

Finish: Strong flavors on the finish with lots of spearmint gum and clove. Medium length, with a small bitter bite as it dissipates. The wood influence also makes an appearance here with a nice warming, lingering spice. There seems to be a bit more personality on the finish than the palate.

Final Thoughts: As we move through fall and into winter, Nelson Brothers Rye whiskey makes an argument as a great cold weather sipper for those looking for something a bit easier than barrel proof. While not treading into any new ground, this is a solid rye offering that can sometimes feel a bit too mainstream. The palate loses a step without any strong standout flavors but does fall back on a good finish. The lower proof, classic rye flavors, and warming spice on the finish make it feel like a perfect fireside sipper or you next great cocktail rye.
