Sazerac Rye Full Proof Review

In-Depth Review

Admit it. You’re curious. You’ve heard the rumors, seen the videos, and caught wind that Buffalo Trace has introduced a $40 BTAC killer. But is the new Sazerac Rye Full Proof really worth the hype? Admittedly it was hard to ignore the excitement around this release but was Buffalo Trace actually going to give the enthusiasts what they’ve been craving? A high proof, attainable rye?

Distilled at Buffalo Trace (and not Barton), Sazerac Full Proof is the latest entry in the recently expanded Sazerac Rye portfolio that includes both 90 and 100 proof versions. Aged at least 4 years (but rumored older) and clocking in at 125 proof – the specs for this latest Sazerac Rye release stack up well against Buffalo Trace’s much more limited Thomas H. Handy expression- but at a much more approachable price point.

Until I got the chance to try it myself, I held back judgement. I definitely wasn’t going to overpay for a permanent addition to their lineup just to join the hype train. But after a few months, I started to see it pop up at local liquor stores. And when I saw K&L had it for only 36.99, I knew this was my chance. So is this as good as the community say it is? Let’s dive in and find out.

Age: Non-age stated but thought to be around 6 years

ABV: 62.5%

Cask: New oak

MSRP: $40

Distillery Name: Buffalo Trace Distillery

Review Date: 4/13/26

Color: Solid Caramel

Nose: The nose starts off with warming clove and allspice before moving into heavy oak, toffee, and bursts of young grain. After settling in the glass, waves of cherry cordial and sawdust appear, buoyed by a streak of vegetal, earthiness running throughout. The nose maintains a remarkably restrained character despite the high proof – establishing an unexpectedly soft demeanor.

Palate: The first sip reveals heavy butterscotch and rye spice mixed with toasted barrel char and warm candied walnuts. As it moves through the palate, honey graham crackers and cinnamon toast crunch settle into the back of the palate. The mouthfeel is like a thick, sweet syrup, enveloping the mouth in a great texture and balanced against a perfect amount of spicy heat.

Finish: Long finish that brings more eucalyptus, orange marmalade and allspice.

Final Thoughts: What Buffalo Trace has done with Sazerac Rye Full Proof is nothing short of remarkable. It somehow captures the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, with a demeanor that’s deceptively easy to drink despite its high-octane specs. It’s balanced and drinkable– and finally gives Sazerac Rye the opportunity to shine it so desperately deserved. It’s hard to believe that this is a new, permanent release from Buffalo Trace that rivals that of some of the best ryes in the business but only asks $40. But is it actually better than Thomas H Handy? It feels like blind comparison is in order. But regardless, this has so far become my favorite rye of 2026.

Score: 93
