Mister Sam Tribute (2023) Whiskey Shelf Review

Shelf Review

Designed to give you all the quick hit information you need when you’re standing in front of your local liquor store’s whisky shelf.

It’s not every day I find myself excited to try a blended whiskey hailing from Canada. But sitting before me is unlike any Canadian whiskey you’ve ever had. Enter Mister Sam’s Tribute whiskey – the brainchild of Sazerac’s Master Blender Drew Mayville. It’s a blend of distillates from around Sazerac’s portfolio and includes American and Canadian whiskies. And while its exact age, whiskies used, and process are secrets – its legend is well-known within the whiskey world. This is Batch 3 and comes in at 128.8 proof with a release of around 1,200 bottles. But thanks to a great friend who happened to win the chance to buy this from Total Wine (thanks Trent), I get the chance to see if this is worthy of the praise or just another overhyped Sazerac product.

Age: Not Stated (Secret)

ABV: 64.4%

Cask: Not Stated (Also a Secret)

MSRP: $250

Distillery Name: Sazerac

Review Date: 6/20/25

Nose: Dusted peanuts, Jasmine tea, milk chocolate, toasted graham crackers, with a splash of overripe fruit. There’s a lovely heat to go along with the rich, deep nose.

Palate: Black pepper, cherry pie, sweet cream, Tabacco leaf, old leather, with a wallop of rye spice. It’s herbaceous, with a deep roast malt note and a lovely, thick, vicious mouth coating texture.

Finish: Long finish with more cherry cordial, lots of well-worn oak, raspberries, dark fruits, and a touch of cocoa and spearmint.

Score: 95

Would I buy again? If I could find a bottle of Mister Sam’s anywhere near MSRP, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up. This is a fabulous pour that crushes any perceptions you might have around blended American whiskies, Canadian whiskies (in general) or anything made by Sazerac not made at Buffalo Trace. This is deeper, richer, and more rewarding than most of the recent BTAC bottles I’ve recently tried and without a doubt, a crowning achievement for Master Blender Drew Mayville. Now if only I could find a bottle….
