Wolves Whiskey 5 Year American Single Malt Shelf Review
Shelf Review
Designed to give you all the quick hit information you need when you’re standing in front of your local liquor store’s whisky shelf.
The American Single Malt category may still has a long way to go to become a staple on the household bar cart – but brands like Wolves Whiskey are doing their part to make it happen. They’ve been building a portfolio of American Single Malt (ASM) products designed to make the category more appealing to both enthusiasts and mainstream drinkers alike. Up until this point, many of the ASM distilleries around the country have been young, craft distilleries operating with incredibly small batches and heavy financial burdens. That often leads to funky or “craft” tasting products where the cuts may be wider than they should be – or aged for too short of time to get the right flavor profiles.
Wolves whiskey is taking a different approach. Best known for extremely limited releases of well-aged, sourced whiskies, Wolves know that if they can crack the American Single Malt category – it could unlock a whole new audience for the small California based producer. Wolves Whiskey’s 5 Year American Single Malt attempts to accelerate flavor development by aging in Arizona – where summers are hot and winters are cold. This dramatic temperature differences accelerates the interaction with the wine and cognac casks that Wolves has chosen to age in and aims to remove any of the “craft funk” that so many ASM’s struggle with. But at $90, and 48% ABV, is this the bottle that could get you into American Single Malt? Let’s dive in and find out.
Age: 5 Years Old
ABV: 48%
Cask: Aged in California wine barrels before finishing in Cognac casks
MSRP: $89.99
Distillery Name: Wolves Whiskey (Distilled and bottled by SanTan Spirits)
Review Date: 7/3/26
Nose: On the nose, it starts off like a hot, musty warehouse – sawdust, and earthy. Then come red apple, honey, grape skins that help round out the nose.
Palate: Milk chocolate, overripe fruit, new oak, freshly crushed tea leaves, underbaked bread, and grilled peaches. Delicate and well-rounded mouthfeel that leans slightly thin.
Finish: Medium length finish accented by barrel char, drying oak, and red wine notes of cherries, poached red apples, and a touch of strawberry.
Score: 85
Would I buy again? Wolves Whiskey may be better known for their incredibly high-priced limited-edition releases, but this 5-year American Single Malt impressed me with its approachable, sweet, well-rounded profile. It doesn’t push into any new territories, and at $90, it feels like it’s priced a bit high for the experience it delivers. But if you’ve always been interested in trying American Single Malt and have been worried about the craft funk – this is a great option to get you excited about the category. I personally won’t be picking up another bottle – but would recommend to others who are looking to branch out beyond their typical pours.
