Penelope Classic Series Kentucky Bourbon Review

In-Depth Review

Since its inception in 2018, Penelope Bourbon has been building an undeniably deep portfolio of expressions designed to cater to every kind of American whiskey enthusiast. From finished bourbons to toasted ryes to hazmat American light whiskies and age stated single barrels, Penelope has never been afraid of experimenting. But with their latest release - known as the Classic Series – they are taking us back to basics: releasing a duo of entry-level bourbon and rye. Penelope says this two-part expansion has been years in the making – with the bourbon marking the first time that the brand has had a widespread release of a product distilled in Kentucky.

Today, we are going to jump into The Classic Series Kentucky Straight Bourbon. It is non-age stated (but at least 4 years old) and features a 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% barley mashbill. It’s distilled in Bardstown Kentucky (likely from its new corporate partners at Luxco) and comes in at 46% ABV. Retailing for $44.99, the new expression is clearly designed to expand the aperture of the brand to the non-enthusiasts among us. But after spending a few days with this latest release – is this a pour that can take Penelope mainstream? Let’s dive in and find out.

The distillery has graciously sent me the bottle for review, but my opinions and thoughts remain my own and I have received no compensation.

Age: Non-Age Stated (but at least 4 years old)

ABV: 46% ABV

Cask: New American Oak

MSRP: $44.99

Distillery Name: Penelope Bourbon Bottling Co (Luxco)

Review Date: 6/29/26

Color: Burnt Caramel

Nose: The nose starts off with a nutty earthiness featuring tea leaves, candy corn, and a slight caramel sweetness. As it settles in the glass, more earthy oak comes through and mixes with freshly smoked burnt ends. A few more moments letting it breathe allows a gentle warmth to creep out of the glass.

Palate: The palate is gentle and inviting – with sticky caramel, toffee, burnt marshmallow, and toasted pecans. A touch of water brings more honey and allspice. It’s extremely well balanced – with an easy sipping character that’s held back by a slightly thin mouthfeel.

Finish: Short finish that maintains a nice warming texture on the tongue that features earthy chocolate, lightly toasted barrel char, and cherry syrup.

Final Thoughts: Penelope’s entry level entrant into the Kentucky bourbon world may not knock your socks off, but will wrap you in a warm, inviting hug that makes you feel right at home. The Classic Series feels like an appropriate way to start an evening – with a gentle nose that gives way to an extremely well-rounded palate and a fast-moving finish. And while the finish will move too quickly for enthusiasts, it’s hard to deny that this has clearly succeeded in creating an excellent entry point for one of the most exciting producers in American whiskey.
