Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask Review
In-Depth Review
Only a handful of distilleries remain committed to growing their own barley, malting it in-house, and staying family owned. Not to mention have their own castle! But that’s what makes Balvenie so unique – a distillery located in the Speyside region, in the famous village of Dufftown. Known as being the “malt whisky capital of the world”, Dufftown is also home to Balvenie’s sister distillery Glenfiddich - as well as Mortlach and many others. Balvenie is a much smaller operation than Glendiffich and relies on more traditional methods of production that tends to create a more robust, heavier style of malt than Glenfiddich. And while its range has grown in recent years, a few bottlings remain core to the Balvenie portfolio.
That’s where Balvenie 14 year Caribbean Cask expression comes in. An example of Balvenie’s prowess with cask finishing, this bottling is one of the brand’s most well-known expressions across the world. Aged for at least 14 years in ex-bourbon casks, it is then finished for “an extended period of time” in casks that formerly held Caribbean rum. Bottled at 43% ABV and priced around $80, it’s a step up from Balvenie’s 12 Year Double Wood but remains far more attainable than their 16 year and 21 year expressions. So, is it worth the step up? Let’s dive in and find out.

Nose: The nose starts off with a mix of sweet and spicy notes including honey, stewed fruits, white pepper, and molasses. There’s a musty funk reminiscent of raw coca that adds a malty character that can be distracting at times. A few minutes in the glass can greatly improve the nose, but it never fully blossoms into something fantastic.
Palate: The palate is gentle and balanced – starting off with salted poached pear, honeysuckle, and sticky toffee, before moving into tropical fruits like melon and pineapple. There’s a touch of clove that appears on the midpalate before settling gently into the finish. The mouthfeel is strong with a mouth coating texture that nods to the strong rum influence.
Finish: A bright medium length finish featuring apricot, honey, and more clove. The finish can be drying but is balanced with pops candied almonds.
Final Thoughts: Balvenie’s 14 year Caribbean Cask expression may not be the distillery’s greatest mainstay offering – but it does provide a good look at the funky character rum can add to good single malt. Earlier in my whisky journey I really liked this bottle; but as I have grown, I feel like I have fallen out of love with it. At times, the funk can be strong and distracting and never provides anything truly memorable. Balvenie’s 14 year is a solid bottle – but if you want something that will wow you, I would rather have one of their Curious Cask selections at a similar price.
