Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve Shelf Review
Shelf Review
Designed to give you all the quick hit information you need when you’re standing in front of your local liquor store’s whisky shelf.
I know what you’re thinking. Here’s another one from Johnnie… What’s could be different about this one? And it’s true - it can be hard to keep track of the positioning of most of Johnnie Walker’s lineup. Yes, Blue is generally considered by most as “the best”- and Red is for your next scotch and soda. But beyond that – it can be hard to figure out what Green, Black, Double Black, Platinum, all are supposed to be. Take Johnnie Walker Gold for example – it’s changed numerous times over the years, with the latest iteration called Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve. Coming in at around $45, and at 40% ABV – what makes this a compelling choice over any of the rainbow of colors in the lineup? Let’s dive in and find out.
Age: Non-Age Stated
ABV: 40%
Cask: Not disclosed
MSRP: $45
Distillery Name: Johnnie Walker (sourced from across Diageo portfolio)
Review Date: 5/27/26
Nose: Cherry cordial, tobacco, old leather, with waves of umami and whiffs of smoke. Rich and hearty – with bigger nose than expected. Settles into more minerality and tones down the fruit.
Palate: Starts with a soft front palate before gaining steam. Orange peel, hazelnut, raisins, apple, and a honey malt. Nice structure with a good mouthfeel and light heat.
Finish: Medium length finish with notes of smoked ham, orange soda, oak, black pepper, and poached apple.
Score: 88
Would I buy again? Absolutely.ThisJohnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve stands above most of the core Johnnie Walker portfolio for its bigger, richer character that balances a mix of fruit and smoke. At around $45, it’s hard to argue that this is significantly better than many other offerings at the price point – and even more compelling than many comparably priced single malts. I’d happily pick up another bottle – and offer it to those who think lower price blended scotch isn’t worth their time. They may find the folks at Johnnie Walker still know a thing or two about making great scotch.
